Meet the Artists

The Creative Team

Director, Set and Costume Designer

Giulio Cesare Perrone (Stage Director) is a playwright, director, set and costume designer.  His approach to theater, informed by his experience and training in the U.S. and Europe, emphasizes the physical aspects of movement and dance, and the central role of the actors/performers/creators in the creative process.  The artistic importance of scenery always incorporates live music, and often video as well. As a writer, designer, and director, Giulio has been recognized with two prestigious Pew Grants and several industry awards.

His commitment to making and supporting progressive, traditional and non-traditional forms of theater and programs gives voice to the many urgent cultural narratives that have been historically excluded from theater throughout his lifetime.  Giulio moved from his native Italy to the United States in 1995.  Now a U.S. resident, Giulio has over 300 theater and opera productions to his credit.

Playwright

Josh Wilder is a playwright, actor, and producer from Philadelphia.  His work has been developed, commissioned, and produced at regional theaters and festivals across the country including The Fire This Time Festival, Classical Theatre of Harlem, New York Theatre Workshop, True Colors Theatre Company, The Kennedy Center, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, 2015 O'Neill National Playwrights Conference, PlayPenn, Company One, InterAct Theatre Company, and Yale Rep.  Past awards include the Holland New Voices Award, the Lorraine Hansberry Award, the Rosa Parks Award, and the ASCAP Cole Porter Prize.

Josh is a former Jerome Fellow and the first national recipient of the Jerome Many Voices Fellowship at The Playwrights’ Center. He has been in residence at The Royal Court Theatre, Sundance at Ucross, and served as Co-Artistic Director at the Yale Cabaret for its 50th season and Co-Founder/Producer of the New Griots Black Arts Festival in the Twin Cities with Jamil Jude. Currently, he’s stationed in Baltimore, MD.
MFA: Yale School of Drama. BFA: Carnegie Mellon.

Text Coach

L. Peter Callender brings to text coaching what decades on stage have made undeniable:  Shakespeare's language is not decoration -- it is action.  With 22 Shakespeare plays in performance credits and more than 15 directing credits across the classical canon, Callender works from the inside of the language not above it.

"The line tells you everything -- where to breathe, where to push, where to surrender.  My job is simply to make that audible."

As longtime Artistic Director of the African-American Shakespeare Company, Artistic Associate at NY Classical Theater, and with 23 years as an Artistic Associate and company member at California Shakespeare Theater, Callender has developed a distinctive approach rooted in physical specificity, tonal precision, and the belief that every actor -- regardless of background -- has an innate right to the full range of classical text.  His coaching strips away the received pronunciation and the received fear, leaving actors with their own voice inside the verse.

He works on iambic stress without rigidity, on the architecture of arrangement within the speech, and on the irreplaceable relationship between thought and breath.  Equally at home with Hamlet's soliloquies and the savage wit of Much Ado, Callender coaches actors toward ownership, not imitation.

Originally from Trinidad, West Indies, his perspective on Shakespeare is transatlantic, intercultural, and firmly grounded in the conviction that classical text is most alive when it is human.  www.lpetercallender.com
